More About Greenspeed

Ask the Greenspeed team what’s fast, green and custom. They’ll tell you it’s their 1998 Chevy S-10, stripped down, rebuilt and fueled by vegetable oil. That’s right. Vegetable oil.

Built in just two months during the summer of 2011, Greenspeed team members took on an impossible deadline: a completely rebuilt, vegetable oil-compatible vehicle ready for the August 11-17 SCTA Speed Week qualifying time trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

As crunch time loomed, the Greenspeed team faced a problem: the level of heat generated by the burning vegetable oil and the amount of power needed to qualify in the time trials put the pistons at risk. Big Twin Diesel, already working with Greenspeed on the project, recommended Jet-Hot’s proprietary coatings to lubricate and protect the parts.

Working under a 24-hour turnaround, Jet-Hot hit the accelerator: Parts were received, coated and returned the same day. Jet-Hot techs used the Slick Coat finish to lubricate the sides of the pistons and the Extreme 1300 coating to evenly dissipate the heat across the piston dome.

With such a tight deadline, team members and sponsoring organizations finished the final build at the Salt Flats just minutes before the end of the event and just in time to pass inspection and get licensed.

Greenspeed’s ultimate goal? To shatter the current speed record for a vegetable oil-powered vehicle (98 mph) at the SCTA El Mirage Dry Lake land speed racing event, held just north of Los Angeles, CA.

According to Greenspeed President and team member Dave Schenker, the event on November 12, 2011, signaled “the first time the [Greenspeed] truck was going to move while being powered by vegetable oil.” Schenker drove the vehicle into history, setting a new record at 139.882 mph and overturning his own record a day later with a 155.331 mph run.
